Transforming societies

Transforming societies

Our sustainable business strategy outlines our intention to work towards three significant global transformation goals that have the potential to deliver meaningful socio-economic benefits for our customers and wider society. Each goal, which is derived from and will be achieved by our core long-term business objectives, recognises the power that mobile has to transform lives. Our efforts focus on: empowering and connecting women in our emerging markets; driving innovation and efficiency in our networks, products and services while enabling our customers to reduce their emissions; helping to equip younger people with the skills they need to thrive in a digital workplace and increasing the opportunities for younger people to work in our business.

Transparency

Transparency

Our sustainable business strategy is founded on Vodafone's commitment to responsible behaviour in everything we do as we strive to ensure we always act lawfully, ethically and with integrity wherever we operate. Our strong commitment to corporate transparency is evidenced through our programmes which address four areas that are the focus of intense public debate and include: a detailed annual disclosure on the amount of tax we pay to governments around the world; our approach to respecting our customers' rights to privacy and freedom of expression; how we work with our suppliers, partners and peers to drive responsible and ethical behaviour and high standards across our supply chain; and responding openly and transparently to public concerns about mobiles masts and health.

Principles and practice

Acting responsibly and with integrity is absolutely integral to our business performance as we know that how we work is as important as what we do and what we achieve. We are committed to the highest standards of ethical behaviour and have clearly stated principles articulated in our Code of Conduct, which govern everything we do. We set out our views on matters such as human rights, bribery and corruption and how we work with our employees in our Sustainable Business Report.

Our CEO discusses the importance of a concerted and consistent approach to tackling corruption globally.

How we’re transforming societies

Women’s empowerment

We are working to extend the economic and social benefits of mobile to more women living in emerging markets, while striving to have a workforce that reflects the diversity of the customers we serve and the broader societies within which we operate. Our goals are:

  • to bring mobile to an additional 50 million women living in our emerging markets over the next decade
  • to strive to be the world’s best employer for women

Energy innovation

As well the strong financial incentive for us to pursue efficiency in our operations, we also see the potential of communications technology to help with emissions reduction and the fight against climate change. We are focusing our efforts in:

  • continuous innovation in the design of our networks and technology centres
  • development of options to replace carbon-intensive energy sources on-grid and off-grid
  • measures to enhance energy efficiency and reduce emissions from our general business and administrative activities
  • helping our customers to reduce their GHG emissions by two tonnes for every tonne of GHG we generate.

Youth skills and jobs

As a long-term, committed, responsible employer and major investor in many countries with relatively high levels of youth unemployment, we believe we should do what we can to help ensure that young people have the skills to prosper in a digital working world. We are exploring how best to support young people:

  • in building their digital skills and accessing learning and employment opportunities
  • by increasing the opportunities for more young people to experience or work within our business

Our transparency programme

What we do matters but so does how we work. We will always strive to ensure we act responsibly and with integrity wherever we operate and report on our approach and performance in our Sustainable Business Report. Our corporate transparency programme is designed to address four areas that are the focus of intense public debate.

Taxation and total economic contribution

Taxation and total economic contribution

We are one of the only communications companies in the world to report our total taxation and economic contribution to society in each of the countries in which we have a legal entity, voluntarily and on a country-by-country actual cash paid basis.

Digital rights and freedoms

Digital rights and freedoms

Our transparency disclosures on matters related to digital human rights include our policies, approach and principles regarding government access to customer data, as well as our approach to managing issues such as freedom of expression, censorship and the digital rights of the child.

Supply chain integrity and safety

Supply chain integrity and safety

Our businesses rely on a very large supply chain and our disclosures related to our sourcing and suppliers reflect our drive to ensure responsible and ethical behaviour among our supply chain and ensure safety in our operations.

Mobiles, masts and health
